Large files can be stored either in their original format
or in a compressed format to save space . Different types
of file compression are used for different types of files,
such as text, graphics, and audio. You usually can reduce
a large file by at least 50%, depending on the type of file
and the type of compression.
In case of audio files, for example, the MP3(Mpeg audio layer3)
format can be used to reduce audio files by as much as 90%
to 93%. Bigger is never better when you are trying to move
a large file across the Net. Other ways to fill a 13 Gb hard
drive include storing video files. These files require even
more long term memory than do audio files. Currently, few
people collect video files from the Internet because they
are so memory intensive. Long- term memory requirements for
video and audio files are driving consumer demand for larger
hard drives on personal computers.
As the cost of a hard drive continues to drop, users can be
counted on to find new ways to use all of the long term memory
on their computers.
In a culture in which you can never be too rich or too thin,
you also can never have too much computer memory.
